Athlete of the Week 10/30
Evelyn Mercer has once again earned the honor of Athlete of the Week! Evelyn had the highest finish in PCA girls cross country history this past weekend at the SCISA State Championship. She tied for 3rd place with a time of 18:40.06, breaking her own school record! She also set a new personal record by 25 seconds, making it her first time completing the 5k in under 19 minutes. Congratulations Evelyn!

Congratulations to 8th grader Nadya Perron for earning Athlete of the Week honors after the SCISA state championships this past weekend! Nadya placed 2nd in the 50 Yard Freestyle with a time of 26.29. She also placed 5th in the 100 Yard Butterfly with a time of 1:06. She competed well at the 4A level and we are excited for her future here at PCA!

Last week at their swim meet at Northwood Academy, Josiah Cooper helped the boys swim team to place 3rd overall. Josiah Cooper came in 1st overall in the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly. The boys 200 Medley Relay consisting of Sam Smith, Gavin Wease, Zach Brennaman and Josiah also came in 3rd overall.

In their game against Cambridge Academy, Senior Cade Patrick rushed for 173 yards and four touchdowns while picking up 9.6 yards per carry. One of Cade's carries totaled in 65 yards.

After an exciting week with victories over Berkeley High School and region rival Porter Gaud, senior Cokey Suddeth has earned athlete of the week honors. In the match against Berkeley High School, Cokey had 11 digs and 22 kills. In the match against Porter Gaud, Cokey had 16 kills, 22 digs and 4 blocks. Following the conclusion of the Eagle Invitational Tournament this past Saturday, opposing coaches voted for Cokey to make the All Tournament Team.

6th grader Evelyn Mercer finished 2nd overall (out of 64 runners) and set a new school record of 19:57 in the process. Her time broke the previous school record, set by Mae Cave in 2019, by 17 seconds! Evelyn's 5k time ranks her at #25 in the state as a SIXTH GRADER! She is the highest ranked 6th grader in the state by over 5 minutes.

PCA Golf Finishes Best Season in History
Girls Varsity GolfPCA was represented with excellence at the SCISA State Golf Tournament last week. Congratulations to Anna Claire Romine and Audrey Bright on their top 20 individual finishes this year. AC tied her personal best score of 84 in tournament play on the second day of state. This year’s team is among the best in the history of the program…finishing 7th in the state. Well done Anna Claire, Audrey, Sydney, Mackenzie, Sofia and Scarlett! It was a joy to watch you compete!

Girls Varsity GolfIt’s ALL work for the PCA Lady Eagles golfers as the team continues to prepare for the state tournament. Last week, players traveled to Orangeburg for an 18 hole practice round at Orangeburg Country Club. As always, it was a tremendous gift to see their parents cheering them on - even as they practiced. On Saturday, the team met for one last practice before Senior Night. Anna Claire Romine led us in prayer as we closed out her last PCA Lady Eagles golf practice. It will be an honor to celebrate Anna Claire and Sofia at this Tuesday’s Senior Night match against Porter Gaud and Northwoods Academy. Let’s Go Girls!

CoEd Varsity Cross CountryThe PCA Cross Country team competed in the SCISA State Championship races on Saturday morning at Heathwood Hall in Columbia. In the girls race, Evelyn Mercer set a new school record with a time of 18:40.06 for the 5k course, an improvement of 25 seconds. In what was the most exciting finish of the day, she finished in a tie for 3rd overall with both runners having the exact same time even down to the hundredths of a second! Evelyn's finish was the highest ever for a PCA female runner, eclipsing the 8th place finishes achieved in 2018, 2019, and 2021. Mary Margaret Wagner cemented a season of huge improvement by running her second best time ever, finishing in 30:36. The PCA boys team placed 9th out of 17 teams, averaging 18:13, our best ever at the state event. Will Terry led the way with his 34th place finish out of 116 runners, running the course in 17:45. CoEd Varsity Cross CountryThe PCA Cross Country team performed extremely well at the Highlander Invitational on Saturday. In the girls' race, Evelyn Mercer broke her own school record by 40 seconds, running the 5k course in 19:13 and finishing 13th out of 193 runners. Mary Margaret Wagner finished in 34:51, her 3rd best time this season. The boys' team finished 12th out of 30 teams despite being one of the youngest teams competing. Will Terry led the Eagles with a new Personal Record (by 38 seconds) of 17:26, good for 48th place out of 252 runners. Trey Wilson improved his personal best by 1:03 with a time of 18:16 while Lucas Rodriguez-Porcel also set a new PR of 18:17. Other Eagle runners setting new PRs were: Heyward Neely (18:29), Joseph Terry (18:40), Alex Avinger (18:41), Miles Johnson (19:20), Wyatt Campbell (20:14), and Russell Crews (25:24). Cam Morris narrowly missed a new PR with a time of 20:16.

CoEd Varsity Cross CountryThe PCA Cross Country team participated in two races this week. On Wednesday, the team travelled to Old Santee Canal Park for the Stag Stampede hosted by Berkeley High School. The boys had a good race finishing 3rd out of 5 teams with Will Terry leading the way with a time of 18:29 and finishing 8th out of 136 runners. Joining Will in the top 25 overall were Heyward Neely (19:07- 14th), Lucas Rodriguez-Porcel (19:10 - 16th), Alex Avinger (19:35 - 20th), and Joseph Terry (19:52 - 25th). Rounding out the top 7 for the boys were Trey Wilson (20:30) and Miles Johnson (21:00). Also finishing well for PCA were Cam Morris (21:48) and Wyatt Campbell (21:52). Mary Margaret Wagner was the only girl competing for the Eagles and she finished in 34:42. Saturday, PCA had 5 athletes compete in the Low Country Invitational at Mullett Hall on John's Island. CoEd Varsity Cross CountryThe PCA Cross Country teams travelled to St. Stephen for the Timberland Wolf Run on Wednesday. Sixth Grader Evelyn Mercer won her second varsity race in a row, running 19:54.65 for the 3.1 miles, and setting a new School Record by 2.60 seconds in the process. There were 95 girls in the Varsity race. The boys team finished 7th out of 17 teams, with the top 5 Eagles averaging 18:50 over the 5k course. Will Terry led the way in 18:05.04, good for 28th place out of 140 runners (a new Personal Record by 14.16 seconds). Rounding out the top 7 for PCA were Heyward Neely (18:40.78, 43rd), Lucas Rodriguez-Porcel (18:49.01, 48th), Joseph Terry (19:17.03, 55th), Trey Wilson (19:20.25, 57th), Alex Avinger (19:34.57, 66th), and Miles Johnson (20:39.03, 87th). Boys Middle School FootballWhat an exciting game last week, and during homecoming week which makes it extra special! The Eagles were flying high on all aspects of the game. Offense got right to it, scoring on every possession in the first half. The defense settled in during the second half after a back and forth battle during the first two quarters. Special teams showed up as well with a kickoff return for a touchdown. Final score was PCA 34 - First Baptist 26. Girls Varsity TennisThe girls varsity tennis team is ending the season strong! This past week they completed two service projects:They collected food, delivered, and organized the pantry at Trident AAA (Area Agency on Aging). This food will serve seniors in need here in the Lowcountry. The team also put on a bake sale to raise funds for No Kid Hungry this past Saturday morning at Brown Fox Coffee. We raised $704. That is matched by William Sonoma for a total of 1,408 or 14,080 meals for Lowcountry kids in need!!!! The girls also had two matches last week. They traveled to Kiawah and defeated First Baptist 9-0 on Monday. They lost to a very tough Ashley Hall team on Wednesday. The current season record is 7 wins- 3 losses. The team will travel to Porter- Gaud on Tuesday afternoon for their last match of the season. As we have been serving our community, we also have been physically working on our serves. Girls Varsity TennisOur Fighting Eagles are now 6-1 for the season after two conference wins last week!! The Eagles hosted First Baptist on Monday, 9/9. After some hard fought matches the girls came out with a clean sweep, 9-0 over First Baptist. Sophia Ralph battled back from a 1-5 deficit to pull out a 6-3, 7-5 win in her singles match. This team fights with heart and never gives up!! On Wednesday, 9/11, we traveled to Summerville to play the Pinewood Panthers. With focus, footwork, and fun the Eagles pulled out a 7-2 victory over the Panthers. This week the Lady Eagles will host Porter Gaud on Monday, 9/16. Match play to begin at 3pm at Mount Pleasant Rec. Girls Junior Varsity VolleyballThe Lady Eagles had a busy week of volleyball this week. We traveled to Pinewood Prep on Tuesdaynight and defeated the panthers in two sets 25-17, 25-13. Audrey Baumgardner, Peyton Little, AnabelleTillery, Norah Lowry, and Juliet Olson all served 100% throughout the match. Juliet led the team with 5aces out of 9 serves! Peyton led the team in hitting percentage with 8 kills out of 11 hits. The wholeteam played as a cohesive unit and earned another region win. Unfortunately, our match against Ashley Hall was postponed until a later date due to hurricane Helen,but we did get to play in the Bishop England Tournament on Saturday. Chloe Guyan, Saylor Sorenson, Alyssa Carper each led with 100% serving. Coco Kucaba had 8 digs, 4 aces, 12 kills and led the team with 0.348 hitting percentage. Girls Varsity VolleyballThe varsity volleyball team had a great week of volleyball. They beat pinewood prep in 3 sets. Cokey Suddeth lead with 11 digs, 13 kills, and 100 % serving percentage, and .400 hitting percentage. Adelaide Suddeth had 7 kills ,4 aces. and a serve receive rating of 3.0. Coco Kucaba also had 4 aces , and a serve receive rating .231. Coco Kucaba, Hannah Delaney, Chloe Guyan, Alyssa Carper, and Adelaide Suddeth each had a 100% servings percentage. Banks jenkins lead with assists, had 5 digs, and 3 aces. The lady eagles then had a tournament at Wilson Hall on Saturday. The team played well and finished first in the silver bracket. They finished 7-3 and had two players make the All- tournament team. CoEd Varsity Cross CountryThe Cross Country team travelled to Moncks Corner last Wednesday for Berkeley High Schools first meet of the season at Old Santee Canal Park. The boys took to the course first and were led by Will Terry, who finished 8th overall out of 154 runners. His time of 18:31 was a new season best. Also scoring for the Eagles were Heyward Neely (22nd), Joseph Terry (25th), Lucas Rodriguez-Porcel (26th), and Trey Wilson (37th). Alex Avinger (40th) and Miles Johnson (43rd) rounded out the top 7 with Miles setting a new personal record. Wyatt Campbell finished 52nd overall and Cam Morris finished 81st. Adam O'Hanley set a new PR by 15.55 seconds and 5th grader Russell Crews improved his best time by 1:11.17. The boys team finished 3rd out of 12 teams, beating Stratford and Berkeley by 59 points each.
