Mercer Sets 25 Second PR -- Boys Place 9th at State

Posted on 10/30/2024

The PCA Cross Country team competed in the SCISA State Championship races on Saturday morning at Heathwood Hall in Columbia.

In the girls race, Evelyn Mercer set a new school record with a time of 18:40.06 for the 5k course, an improvement of 25 seconds.  In what was the most exciting finish of the day, she finished in a tie for 3rd overall with both runners having the exact same time even down to the hundredths of a second!  Evelyn's finish was the highest ever for a PCA female runner, eclipsing the 8th place finishes achieved in 2018, 2019, and 2021.  Mary Margaret Wagner cemented a season of huge improvement by running her second best time ever, finishing in 30:36.

The PCA boys team placed 9th out of 17 teams, averaging 18:13, our best ever at the state event.  Will Terry led the way with his 34th place finish out of 116 runners, running the course in 17:45.  He was joined by Trey Wilson (18:02), Joseph Terry (18:09), Heyward Neely (18:32), Lucas Rodriguez-Porcel (18:37), Alex Avinger (18:43), and Miles Johnson who had a personal record run of 19:17.  The times posted by PCA would have given them the State Runner-Up position in 3A.

All of our runners worked extremely hard this year and the future looks extremely bright for PCA cross country as all of our runners are 9th grade or below with the exceptions of Joseph Terry (SR) and Trey Wilson (JR).
